- M+S is a tread-design definition. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) calls for slots reaching at least 1/2 inch into the tread from its edge and at least 25% open area, measured on the mold. It isn’t based on a snow traction test.
- The mountain snowflake (3PMSF) means the tire passed a snow traction test on packed snow (ASTM F1805), scoring at least 1.10 times the grip of a standard reference tire (1.12 against the newer reference tire). It sits next to the M+S marking.

How to read these numbers
- Different sources. The KO3, A/T4W, Toyo and Grabber counts come from forums only, mostly Tacoma owners. The others lean on Tire Rack reviews, which are often written in the first few thousand miles.
- Who chose the tire. Many Goodyear and Michelin reviewers got their tires on a new truck rather than choosing them. Most Firestone and Mickey Thompson reviewers chose theirs. Compare each tire’s own pattern, not one tire’s positives against another’s.
- Young samples. The KO3 and A/T4W are newer, and no owner in our sample had worn out a set. Wear can’t pick a winner yet.
- One name, two builds. LT and passenger versions of the Goodyear and Baja Boss are built differently, and their reports are pooled here.
Tire by tire
BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3
Owners talk most about a quiet, comfortable ride: 19 of 39 call it quiet and none call it loud. Six report trouble balancing at least one tire. The highest mileage reported is 35,000–40,000, where one owner says wet and snow grip had dropped off.
Falken Wildpeak A/T4W
15 of 28 owners call it quiet, and 8 report good wet grip with no complaints. Two owners on C- and E-load sizes call the ride rough. One owner found a 5-inch split across the tread at 5,000 miles.
Toyo Open Country A/T III
Wear drew the most complaints in our forum sample: 5 of 21 owners, including irregular lug wear at 35,000 mi and sets lasting about 25,000. Two owners report 35,000 and 40,000+ miles. Toyo recalled two passenger sizes, 265/60R20 115T and 265/70R18 116T, in February 2026 over a tread-separation risk (NHTSA campaign 26T005).
General Grabber A/TX
Wear reports are the strongest in our sample: 7 positive and none negative, with one set at the wear bars at 77,000 mi and several between 40,000 and 58,000. Three of 23 owners call it loud. One lost a set to a sidewall puncture from construction debris.
Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S
Cooper no longer includes the AT3 4S in its own list of all-terrain tires, and it now comes only in passenger sizes on 15–18-inch wheels. Wear drew more negative reports (6) than positive (4). Cooper’s newer all-terrain, the Discoverer Road+Trail AT, isn’t covered here yet.
Yokohama Geolandar A/T4
11 of 38 owners call it quiet. Wear drew 4 positive reports and no negative ones, though most reviews are under 10,000 miles. One owner still calls the tires quiet past 30,000 mi. Ride drew 13 positive reports and 4 negative.
Hankook Dynapro AT2 Xtreme
The thinnest sample here: one forum owner, and 9 of the 21 Tire Rack reviews give no detail. Hankook rates every listed size for severe snow and gives the longest warranty in this group, 70,000 mi on passenger sizes.
Nitto Recon Grappler A/T
Wet grip is the most common complaint: 4 negative reports to 1 positive. Nitto doesn’t claim a severe-snow rating. Wear reports lean positive (7 to 2), including two sets past 80,000 mi, but one owner reports cracks between the tread blocks on all four tires at 12,000 mi and says the warranty claim was denied.
Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar
Snow and wet drew more negative reports than positive (snow 7 to 8, wet 3 to 8), and 4 owners report poor grip on ice. Many of these reviewers got the tires on a new truck. Wear reports lean positive (10 to 5), from one owner’s 80,000-mile first set to one set worn out at 8,000.
Michelin LTX A/T2
No owner in our sample calls it loud, and 9 of 28 praise the ride. Two owners report earlier sets lasting 62,000 and 70,000 mi. Most reviewers drive 3/4- and 1-ton trucks, and Michelin offers no severe-snow rating, no flotation sizes and no 285/70R17.
Firestone Destination A/T2
13 owners call it quiet and 1 calls it loud. It comes only in passenger sizes, so it suits lighter trucks and SUVs rather than 33–37-inch builds. Firestone doesn’t state a severe-snow rating.
Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/T
Snow (13 positive) and wet (8 positive) drew no complaints, mostly from owners who chose the tire. 4 of 30 call it loud. Wear is mixed: one Jeep owner reports a quarter of the tread left at 64,000 mi, and another wore a set out at 29,000 in 11 months.

Which all-terrain tires have a severe-snow (3PMSF) rating?
Of the 12 here, the makers state it for the BFGoodrich KO3, Falken A/T4W, Toyo A/T III, General Grabber A/TX, Cooper AT3 4S, Yokohama A/T4 and Hankook AT2 Xtreme. Goodyear states it for select LT sizes, and Mickey Thompson for sizes 12.50 in wide and narrower. Michelin, Nitto and Firestone don’t state it.
How long do all-terrain tires last?
Owner reports range widely, from a set worn out at 8,000 miles to one at the wear bars at 77,000. We don’t average them, because driving, load and rotation differ from owner to owner.
Why aren’t the BFGoodrich KO2 or Falken A/T3W here?
Both have been replaced by newer models, the KO3 and A/T4W. We count only reports that name the current model.
